The Effects of a Praise Activity Program on Self-Esteem and Social Behavior in Poverty-stricken Children

Abstract

|
Purpose: The study examined the effects of a praise activity program on the self-esteem and social behavior in poverty-stricken children.
Methods: A randomized controlled pre-post test design was used. The participants were 26 children who were poverty-stricken children attending a community mental health center and community welfare center in P city. Fourteen were assigned to the experimental group and twelve to the control group. The program consisted of 12 sessions for 60 minutes per session, 2 days a week, for 6 weeks. Instruments used for this study were self-esteem and social behavior.
Results: The scores of total self-esteem, family self, social self, total social behavior, sociality and independency
increased significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group.
Conclusion: This study provides evidence for the potential and beneficial effect of a praise activity program in poverty-stricken children. The praise activity program could be adequately used to improve quality of life and to decrease problem behavior in poverty-stricken children.
